Taping a lacrosse stick shaft with VukGripz lacrosse grip tape

Get it right the first time

Do this, not that

✓ Do

  • Wrap edge-to-edge (eliminates raised areas)
  • Keep your hands together and guide the tape with your thumbs
  • Peel the backing in small sections, not all at once
  • Finish both ends of the grip with finishing tape
  • If you trim the grip, cut a long diagonal away from you

✕ Don't

  • Overlap the grip (raised edges wear faster)
  • Pull or stretch the tape tight (fold in w/ edges sticking)
  • Rip all the backing off at once
  • Leave cut or exposed ends uncovered
  • Cut straight across the grip

How to tape your lacrosse stick

1

Keep your hands together (IMPORTANT STEP)

Hold both hands close together right at the shaft and use your thumbs to guide and work the tape around the stick. This is different from how most players apply cloth tape, and it's the key to a clean VukGripz wrap.

2

Don't stretch or pull it tight (IMPORTANT ADJUSTMENT)

Cloth tape trains you to pull hard. Don't do that with VukGripz. Pulling it tight makes the edges curl in and stick to themselves. Use only enough thumb pressure to lay the tape flat around the shaft.

3

Stick and peel

Remove the backing in small sections as you go. The backing keeps the grip stiff, stable and supported while you wrap. Peeling off a big section exposes the adhesive and makes that part of the grip flimsy and hard to control.

4

Wrap edge-to-edge

Lay each wrap right up against the last one, edge-to-edge, without overlapping. This protects the edges from your hands sliding up and down the shaft. Overlapping creates raised edges that wear the grip faster.

Pro Tip: Edge-to-edge application extends the life of the grip. Overlapping can be done, but it isn't recommended.

5

Finish both ends

Apply finishing tape to both ends of the grip. It gives your hands a smooth transition from shaft to grip and protects the ends of the tape during play.

Pro Tip: Replace the finishing tape as it wears. Electrical tape or athletic tape both work well since they're thin and strong enough for lacrosse.

How to Wrap Multiple Spots with a Grip

Special cases

Custom placement, finishing tape & overlapping

Cutting the grip for custom spots (PRO TIP)

  • You can put VukGripz anywhere you want on your stick, and you can cut it to fit.
  • Cut diagonally, away from the stick, so the cut end tapers.
  • Make the diagonal a few inches long so the end tapers smoothly instead of leaving a step.
  • Cover every cut or exposed end with finishing tape (or electrical tape) to get the most life out of your grip.

Replacing your finishing tape

  • Finishing tape takes the wear at the ends so your grip doesn't have to.
  • Replace it whenever it starts to wear. Some players re-tape the ends after every practice or game. That's up to the player, coach or parent.
  • Electrical tape and athletic tape are both good replacements.

Edge-to-edge vs. overlapping

  • Edge-to-edge is the recommended method. It protects the edges from your hands sliding on the shaft.
  • Overlapping creates raised edges that catch and wear out faster.
  • You can overlap if you prefer, but edge-to-edge application is what keeps your grip under warranty.

Lacrosse taping FAQ

Do I have to pull VukGripz tight like cloth tape?

No. Pulling it tight makes the edges curl in and stick to themselves. Keep your hands together and use light thumb pressure, just enough to lay the tape flat.

Can I overlap the wraps?

You can, but it isn't recommended. Overlapping creates raised edges that wear faster, and edge-to-edge application is what keeps your grip under warranty.

Can I put it anywhere on my stick?

Yes. Wrap it wherever you want on the shaft. If you cut it, cut on a long diagonal so the end tapers, and cover every exposed end with finishing tape.

How much of my shaft will one roll cover?

Roughly 11 to 13 inches when wrapped edge-to-edge. The exact coverage depends on the diameter of your shaft.

How often should I replace the finishing tape?

Whenever it starts to wear. Some players re-tape the ends after every practice or game. Electrical tape or athletic tape both work.

Why are my edges curling?

The tape was most likely pulled too tight, or too much backing was peeled off at once. Keep your hands together, use light thumb pressure and peel the backing in small sections.
