How to Hold a Hockey Stick

How to Hold a Hockey Stick

There are two main ways to grip a hockey stick: with the “traditional” grip, or the “reverse” grip. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to choose the grip that best suits your playing style.

Traditional Grip: The traditional grip is the most popular choice among hockey players. To grip the stick with the traditional grip, place your hand on the stick at the very end, and wrap your fingers around the top of the stick. Next, place your thumb on the back of the blade, and tuck it in between your index and middle finger. Finally, rest your pinky finger on the bottom of the stick.

Advantages:

  • The traditional grip gives you more power when shooting the puck, since you can use the muscles in your forearm and wrist to generate force.
  • It also provides better control of the puck when stickhandling and passing.

Disadvantages:

  • The traditional grip can be less comfortable for some players, since the hand is positioned in an awkward way at the end of the stick.
  • It can also be difficult to generate quick, accurate wrist shots with this grip.

Reverse Grip: The reverse grip is less popular than the traditional grip, but it’s gaining popularity among hockey players. To grip the stick with the reverse grip, place your hand on the stick in the middle, and wrap your fingers around the top of the blade. Next, place your thumb on the back of the blade, and tuck it in between your index and middle finger. Finally, rest your pinky finger on the bottom of the stick.

Advantages:

  • The reverse grip gives you more control of the puck when stickhandling and passing.
  •  It’s also easier to generate quick, accurate wrist shots with this grip.

Disadvantages:

  • The reverse grip can be less comfortable for some players, since the hand is positioned in an awkward way in the middle of the stick.
  • It can also be difficult to generate power when shooting with this grip.

So, which grip should you use? Ultimately, it’s up to you. Experiment with both grips and see which one feels more comfortable and gives you better results.
