Green Pickleball Grip on Pickleball Paddle

What is Pickleball?

The game of pickleball is rapidly growing, likely because of the versatility of the sport. Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors, in singles or doubles, and can be played recreationally or competitively- making the sport inclusive for all.

Pickleball is played on a 20’ x 44’ court with a net in the middle, dividing the court into two. Whether you are playing singles or doubles, the court stays the same size. Each player must have one paddle, and the aerated ball must be one solid color, if you are following USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) rules. The paddles can either be composite or wooden, and are a little larger than the average table tennis paddle.

How Do You Play?

The most common way to play a game of pickleball is to play the best of three matches, so whichever team wins two games first. The game always begins with an underhand serve so the ball goes over the net, the opposing player (or team) lets it bounce once, and then hits it back over the net. From there, the two players (or teams) volley back and forth. Players are not to step into the kitchen (the area between the net and the first line on the court) unless the ball has already bounced once. There are no double bounces, don’t let the ball hit the net, and don’t let the ball go out of bounds. The winning team is the team that reaches eleven points first, or leads by 2 (Play Pickleball).

Can I Play?

Every US state and Canadian province have official pickleball courts- indoors and outdoors! In 2019, there were over 3.3 million players in the United States, including 2 million “casual” players, and 1.3 million competitive players. 28.0% of pickleball players are between the ages of 18-34, but range anywhere from 6 years old to older than 65 years old.

Join the movement! The number of players across the US has only increased since 2018, equalling a 29.1% increase over those three years alone (USAPA)!
