Field hockey may seem like a straightforward game, but behind the scenes, there is a lot of strategy that goes into gameplay.  The more you understand the game, the easier it is to anticipate what the other team is planning on doing.  This will give you a huge advantage, and could be the difference between winning and losing. 

Combined with decent skill, tactical knowledge can turn a good hockey player into a great one.  As skill level rises, so does the need for a strong offensive plan.  Physical ability can only take you so far if the opposing  team has a solid game plan.  Being able to anticipate the other team's plans and moves gives a distinct advantage. 

Field Hockey Tactics- Execution Boost

There are many different tactics that you can use to gain an advantage over the opposing team. Some tactics are pre-planned and others are in response to dynamic plays.  The more well versed you are in different tactics and how you can implement them, the better of a hockey player you will be. 

Being able to move the ball down the field effectively is critical to winning games.  Teamwork and well rehearsed tactics will help you to accomplish this!

Pre-planned, or set tactics, are usually used for set-piece plays like out-letting, long-corners and pressing and penalty corners.  The more you practice each set-play, the better you will be able to execute them.  Practicing these tactics are required in order to be able to carry them out effectively and efficiently.In addition to knowing how to use them, you also need to know when to use them.

Tactics can be planned for specific situations and with specific players.  Field hockey teams who have played and practiced together for a long time can excel at formation and rehearsed passing patterns.  

Field Hockey Tactics- Preparedness

Video analysis is a great way to learn about your opposing team's strengths and weaknesses.  Once you can identify these, you will be able to target and exploit them during a game.  Having a good game plan is essential, but so is having the ability to modify that game plan and adapt to what is being thrown at you.

Staying calm, and collected no matter what is happening on the field will help you to make better decisions.  The better grasp you have of what is going on in front of you, the easier it will be to formulate and execute a plan. Recognizing the phase of the game is critical to outplay your opponent.  Many factors can affect this, so the more prepared you are, the better you will be able to react.

 

Field hockey is a team sport, but the more knowledgeable you are as an individual, the better you can help your team.
